Hot-end Coating (MBTC)

Hot-end Coating (MBTC)

Finishing and Coatings

The quality of glass and bottle jars is subject to different influences, and one of its most important and very often underestimated, is the hot end coating.

We supply a high purity, water contamination resistant blend of Monobutyltin Trichloride, with over 99.0% of Butyltin Trichloride, with the purpose to produce a surface coating of tin oxide on glass containers, which provide a sound base for cold end coating materials

A hot end coating of Tin Oxide, applied evenly with a vaporizing system, at an average of 35 CTU, is equivalent to a thickness of approximately 10 nanometers.
Although the layer is very thin, it protects the surface of the glass against contact with other material, but it provides no scratch resistance against glass-to-glass contact and higher loadings, which obliges for another surface treatment, the cold-end coating. This metal oxide layer also provides the basis for the mentioned cold end coating.
A too thin layer of hot end coating leads to an insufficient penetration of the cold end coating product. A too high hot end coating (> 50 CTU), which is normally invisible, can however lead to visible spots or marks after a few caustic soda washes. Layers of >70 CTU can create detectable irisation
